Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza hired a Du Quoin native to serve as an outreach coordinator in Southern Illinois, and she opened an office in Perry County.

In a Tuesday news release, Mendoza's office says Josh Downs has been hired to serve as the southern region outreach coordinator for the comptroller.

Downs will be working with local legislators, units of government, constituents, and nonprofits to communicate with the comptroller’s office, and will work to expand access to the comptroller's office’s services, including the local debt recovery, checks for cash and Smart Business Illinois.

The Southern Illinois office is located in the Perry County Government Building. Downs will hold office hours there from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday "most weeks," according to the release. The office is at 3764 Illinois 13/127 in Pinckneyville. Contact information for Downs is 217-299-2761 or josh.downs@illinoiscomptroller.gov.

Downs graduated from Du Quoin High School in 2003 and SIU Carbondale in 2008. He served on the Du Quoin City Council from 2011 to 2015 and is currently a commissioner for the Perry County Housing Authority.
