Excited to take a ride over the new Spring Valley bridge?

It could be open to traffic as soon as Monday. The Illinois Department of Transportation is expected to have traffic transferred from the old bridge to the new structure early next week, weather pending.

Nate Sell, construction field engineer for IDOT, said the opening is not set in stone, but Monday is the target date. Contractors are still finishing up some cement work that could be impeded by rain, he said.

But be careful approaching the Route 89 bridge when it does open. Sell said temporary traffic signals will still be in place for the foreseeable future.

Workers are currently tying in the new roadway to the existing roadway near the railroad bridge on the north side of the river.

Sell said demolition will follow over the next several months as workers remove the old roadway and the bridge.

“That will be pretty time consuming,” he said. “We don’t know how long it will take.”

Spring Valley mayor Walt Marini said it will be good for the new bridge to open, more than seven years after IDOT first announced their intention to replace the bridge.

However, he said there is no fanfare planned for the opening next week. Marini said between city and state officials, it was decided the official ribbon cutting for the Illinois Valley Veterans Memorial Bridge will be once it is officially complete, which could take place in the fall.

Construction worker’s vehicles won’t be the only ones on the Route 89 bridge in Spring Valley next week. The new bridge, which will be known as the Illinois Valley Veterans Memorial Bridge, is scheduled to open to traffic as early as Monday. However, temporary signals will still be in place as the construction project is finished.
