OTTAWA — The task of refilling Ottawa’s portion of the Illinois and Michigan Canal is underway.

The groundbreaking took place Sunday and now Army and Marine reserves are conducting earthwork expected to take four weeks. Concrete goes during August and then water (400 gallons per minute) get pumped in from a shallow well in September.

The project will be largely complete by October.

Arnie Bandstra, president of the Ottawa Canal Association, urged donors to continue pledging contributions toward the $200,000 fundraising goal, which would be a great way to celebrate Illinois’ upcoming birthday on Dec. 3.

“This year is the 200th anniversary of the state of Illinois,” Bandstra said, “and the I&M Canal was a key part to the growth of the State of Illinois and Chicago, in particular.”
