CARBONDALE — Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti and Republican-elected officials held a news conference Tuesday at the Carbondale Civic Center to explain why they believe a progressive tax, as proposed by gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker, is a bad idea.

They lambasted Pritzker for not providing specifics for his progressive tax plan beyond saying he would rely on the General Assembly’s knowledge and guidance. Sanguinetti said the only numbers they had to go on from the GA were from a proposal made by state Rep. Robert Martwick, D-Chicago — Sanguinetti said this would have raised taxes on low income households but didn’t have specific numbers on how to say how much. However, according to Capitol Fax, Pritzker has said he does not support Martwick’s plan.

Sanguinetti and the others said Gov. Bruce Rauner’s plan to stay spending and cut excessive spending will be better for the state than increasing the state’s expenditures.

“It should give us all fear if not pause,” Sanguinetti said of the proposed progressive tax. “It will crush Illinois working families.”
