Fair tax will help state provide quality education

In my 30-plus years teaching in the Staunton School District I have seen my share of ups and downs. The past few years would be in the down category.

Due to the lack of state funding, our district has had to deal with budget cuts that cut to the core of our mission. Our students were the ones who suffered in the short and long run. Staff and services that were in desperate need were cut.

But, with the state stepping up and adopting the new Evidence Based Funding model, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. Staff and services are being restored to the benefit of our students. Many thanks to all who pushed for these reforms — but I would argue that the fight is not over yet.

To make sure that our schools have the necessary funding that they need the state needs to adopt a fair tax system. Gov. J.B. Pritzker seems to have a plan that will make our tax system fairer and raise needed revenue for our schools. We need to adopt a tax system that will guarantee that the necessary revenue to fund our schools will be available.

In closing, we need to continue to pressure the state to fulfill their commitment to our schools. That pressure needs to come from all citizens who believe that all children have a right to a quality education.
