Though flights decreased at airports across the globe in the early stages of the pandemic, Springfield's airport was recognized as going above and beyond during turbulent times.

Illinois Department of Transportation announced Springfield's Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport (SPI) was named as the top primary airport in the state in 2020. A primary airport is one with more than 10,000 annual commercial travelers.

"Numerous airport partners, stakeholders and tenants contribute to our efforts in providing a first-class facility and quality services,” said Frank Vala, chair of Springfield Airport Authority. “Receiving these honors is a statement of the team effort the Board and the staff embrace as we are all committed to improving the quality of living and advancement of our community."

IDOT grouped its annual awards and announced it at an event in late September. Consideration for each award was based on the cumulate accomplishments from the past two years, according to IDOT. Decatur Airport (DEC) was named the top primary airport in 2021.

“Aviation is one of the key components that goes into making Illinois the transportation hub of North America,” said IDOT secretary Omer Osman. “Our aviation partners take great pride in the work they do supporting transportation, jobs and quality of life in their communities. These awards highlight their efforts as well as those of the entire Illinois aviation community.”

Criteria for the award was based how well the airport worked with IDOT’s Division of Aeronautics, the airport’s safety record, promotion of aviation and educational events and general maintenance, according to IDOT and SPI.

SPI was also awarded the 2021 Outstanding Achievement Award for its terminal expansion and ADA Improvement Project from the Illinois Public Airport Association for accessibility upgrades.
