Peoria Journal Star

Tuesday, June 21, 2022  |  Article  |  Jennifer Howard-Adler

The Illinois Primary Election is set for June 28. Voters will have the chance to cast their ballots in races for governor, congressional seats, state legislative offices and a variety of local positions. The following are offices that the Journal Star has reported on:

FEDERAL OFFICES

U.S. Senate – GOP

The GOP primary field is crowded with those seeking to challenge U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Illinois, as her first six-year term draws to a close.

Duckworth is running unopposed, meaning that, unless someone drops out of the race, whoever wins the Republican primary vote on June 28 will face off against Duckworth in the Nov. 8 general election.

STATE OFFICES

Governor

Eight candidates are running for governor of Illinois. We sent questionnaires to each of the candidates on the ballot, asking them to answer questions about pension obligations, state population loss, escalating costs of healthcare, how to handle a COVID surge and what small businesses need due to the pandemic.

16th Congressional District

Four candidates are campaigning to succeed U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger in the newly drawn 16th Congressional District and keep the seat in Republican Party hands.

17th Congressional District

Six candidates are campaigning to succeed U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos in the 17th Congressional District and keep the seat in Democratic party hands.

A pair of Republicans are campaigning to flip the Congressional seat long held by U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos from blue to red.

IL House

87th District Representative

Two Tazewell County political leaders will square off in the Republican primary for the new 87th House District for a spot in the new Illinois General Assembly.

93rd District Representative

State Rep. Mark A. Luft, 91st District, will attempt to retain his seat in the Illinois House in the GOP primary June 28. He will face challenger Travis Weaver. With the redrawn boundaries, Luft, who was elected in 2020, finds himself in the 93rd District.

105th District Representative

Four candidates are competing in the Republican primary for the 105th Illinois House District race. Newly redrawn to include all or portions of nine counties, the mostly rural district includes Pontiac, Chillicothe, Washington and the far northeastern corner of Bloomington.

IL SENATE

37th Senate

Both Brett Nicklaus and Win Stoller point to their conservative bona fides as reasons why voters should send them to the Statehouse to fill the state Senate seat for the newly redrawn 37th District. The winner of the June 28 Republican primary, at the moment, will be unopposed during the November election because no Democrat is running for office.

Attorney General

Three candidates are vying for the Republican nomination for Illinois attorney general in the June 28 primary election.

LOCAL OFFICES

School board candidates

Three candidates are vying for two seats on the Peoria Public Schools board. Current board President Gregory Wilson, former school board member Dan Walther and newcomer Paris McConnell will be on the ballot June 28.

87th District Tazewell

Two Tazewell County political leaders will square off in the Republican primary for the new 87th House District for a spot in the new Illinois General Assembly. County Treasurer Mary Burress will face anesthesiologist and county board member Bill Hauter in the June 28 contest.

Tazewell County Board

Eight candidates will run for seven Tazewell County Board District Three seats during June’s Republican primary election. Russ Crawford of East Peoria is one of seven incumbents in the field, along with Bill Atkins, Dave Mingus and Greg Longfellow of Washington; Sierra Smith of East Peoria, and Mike Harris and Tammy Rich-Stimson of Mackinaw. They will try to fend off challenger Billy Brandenburg of Mackinaw.

Tazewell County Treasurer

As two candidates seek the Republican nod for Tazewell County Treasurer in next month’s primary election, voters will have an opportunity to choose between experience on the Tazewell County Board or in-depth knowledge of the Treasurer’s office.
