The Republican Party will announce Friday that it will hold its 2024 national convention in Milwaukee, according to the Washington Post.

The announcement has been expected for weeks, but the national party is set to ratify the decision after a week of summer meetings in Chicago.

Milwaukee was recommended by the party's selection committee last month and became the only viable contender after the other competitor, Nashville, dropped out as its City Council this week voted down a bill to host the meeting.

With Democratic Party officials still considering a Chicago bid to host the DNC convention, the region could see a boost in hotel bookings in 2024 as party honchos from both sides descend on the Midwest.

Milwaukee hosted a dramatically scaled-back Democratic National Convention in 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic canceled much of the in-person gathering and the party hosted a largely virtual conference with meetings across the country.

Wisconsin has played a pivotal role in presidential elections, including in 2016 when it went for Donald Trump by less than 1% in helping secure a surprising victory over Hillary Clinton, before swinging back in 2020, again by less than 1%, in favor of Joe Biden as he defeated Trump.
